Bundaberg - Overproof | Australia (1)

Why is it called "Overproof"?

Several years ago there was no precise instrument to measure the degree of alcohol, an ingenious test was used to determine the potency of spirits. Ordinarily, gun powder was saturated with alcohol. If when it was lit, the powder ignited, it was an "Overproof" spirit. If it didn't ignite, it was Underproof.
Nowadays, we do not risk igniting gun powder, instead we use an instrument called a blood alcohol meter to measure the degree of alcohol.
The term "proof" refers to an alcohol that can contain 50% volume, or 100 "proof". "Underproof" means that rum has less than 50% alcohol per liter, while "Overproof" means that rum has more than 50% alcohol per liter.
