It's the Britain's Got Talent Final tonight!!!!So, what exactly is talent? Workplace talent that is...When you do pluck up the courage to ask leaders or HR or L&D to define what talent actually is you are generally met initially with an uneasy silence and then vague mumblings about skills, experience, qualifications, knowledge, intelligence, personality and performance.Talent is actually, or could easily be, the universal language that cuts through everyone, absolutely everyone, and forms the very foundations on which those skills and qualifications are built, providing the individual with purpose and stimulation whilst preventing them from becoming burnt out and inadvertently promoted into a state of incompetence. The solution to the apparent "talent shortage" is a simple one if approached with the right insight, produced from within each of us. An inside to outside perspective. We are currently making the simple overly complex and we are all suffering from the effects as a consequence. Let's start by first defining what talent really actually is!Humanixs

Getting past the obvious that it's a unit of currency. I'll pay you 13 talents not to have to watch Simon Cowell.Actually it's a great question as even dictionaries disagree. Generally it's a natural aptitude but some say that doesn't need to be taught and others see it as something to be developed. I would turn it around. Often you don't know you have it. It's the thing that comes easy or you do naturally that others may have to strive to be at your level or never attain. Once you even begin to knit the fog of what it is then How do we measure itHow do we know it's improving How do we develop it .I think that's enoug of a piece ..

And now for something completely different!A Masterclass in Change Management in aid of the YMCA ACTIVEly June fundraising event. We are each having to deal and cope with the effects of change throughout our entire lives. That can be within our own personal lives or within our businesses and associated careers. It can seem constant, daunting and at times overwhelming as we can have numerous changes occurring at any one time. This Change Masterclass has been devised to help you as an individual, and also as a business, to navigate the plethora of emotions that are at play and will be totally unique to the individual. That said, those individual experiences will impact not only the individual themselves but also those around them, and vice versa.Taking a moment to stand back and understand the complexity of those emotions and relationships is vital and this one morning will allow you the luxury to "slow down to speed up". Who knows, you may even build relationships with others around you during the morning and who are going through or have gone through similar or even the very same experiences? And here's the added bonus! Your attendance will also provide much needed funds for the YMCA and help them to continue to carry out the amazing work they do for the homeless within Burton and surrounding areas, finding long term solutions to this seemingly ever increasing problem . Attached for you is a "flyer" that provides more details of how to book your place on the Change Masterclass. There are limited spaces available. If you cannot make it on the 24th June then there are other ways of contributing to the YMCA ACTIVEly month as I will be walking 50 miles over two days on the 27th and 28th June. You can even add your company logo to the T-Shirt I will be wearing during the 2 days (I will be wearing a different one each day; for hygiene and sociability purposes! 😂 )I am really looking forward to hearing from you and who knows, seeing you on Monday 24th June which would be fantastic.DavidAnd a big thank you to all those already involved in this initiative:Emma Northam Richard Lloyd Ben Nelson Ian Pownall Isabelle Winter Holly Hinton Nick Smith

Well that was unexpected but gratefully received.Thank you BforB Staffordshire for the kind words and mention today but also for the amazing conversations and relationships that are currently being built during our meetings. Every time we meet we learn more about each other and make those relationships even stronger.

In 1920 Edmond Locard (1877–1966) came up with a forensic concept, Locard's Exchange Principle. A principle that still holds true today in the world of criminology. In essence,"Every contact leaves a trace"The principle states that,"with contact between two items, there will be an exchange of microscopic material. This certainly includes fibres, but extends to other microscopic materials such as hair, pollen, paint, and soil"Now, let's take this principle one vitally significant step forward and extend it to people. People themselves leave a trace whenever they come into contact with one another. That "microscopic" material can also include feelings, trust and most importantly, relationships; no matter how brief or fleeting those realtionships endure.Last week was a very special week for me personally and brought home the long held belief that, in its most rawest of forms, when people do connect they most definitely leave a trace. An indelible trace. In my book Speak Up, Listen Down, Chapter 7 "Tragedy comes with the job...and with life" describes the tragic events of December 1995 surrounding the death of a young child whilst being driven to a Christmas party by his father. This was the most profound moment of that 30 year police career and left an everlasting emotional memory. It left a trace. It also resulted in receiving the most heartfelt of accolades and confirmation that I had made a difference. It was not received from my peers or my home police service but from the family of the young child who had so tragically died. It came in the form of a small handwritten card and simply read,"Thank you for being here for us - what more can we say"At the time of this tragedy I was in my mid twenties and the father of a 1 year old daughter. The circ*mstances resonated with me and yes, they hit me hard. It also begged the question, why do bad things happen to good people? A question that I still at times grapple with. Here's the amazing thing. From that Christmas on, and without fail I receive a Christmas card from the family and I have always sent one in return. This may sound strange but the father and I have not physically met during those 28 years, not since myself and colleagues attended the funeral of a life ended all too short. We had not met. That was until last week when we decided to meet over a cup of coffee and catch up on those missing 28 years. 3 hours later after we met we were still talking...For me the most notable comment made during those 3 hours was that the father had not fully appreciated what an impression his life and that of his son's all too short life had made on mine. For the better. Those brief but traumatic events of that Christmas and New Year of 1995, and the contact between people had left a remarkable and indelible trace.A hug and a tear meant so much and yes, undoubtedly every contact does leave a trace...

To all my network in the Staffordshire area why not come along and have a taster of what is possible from high quality conversations over a high quality breakfast?
