Douglas Lenat, one of the really great AI pioneers has passed. “Why AM and Eurisko appear to work” by Lenat was a key paper that caused me to get interested in AI. I later had the chance to briefly work with him during the organization of the “What Went Wrong and Why” AAAI Seminar that Dan Shapiro and I organized in 2006 and the ensuing special issue of the AI magazine. For me, it really was meeting one of my heroes. He was a brilliant researcher who showed many of us the path. Rest in Peace Mr Lenat!

To those of us who have been in the "AI" industry for a while and developed actual applications in industry, the recent AI craze is reminiscent of previous AI hype cycles. I fear "AI winter is coming" again and this will be a longer one.I am not saying that LLMs are useless. Far from it. They are impressive and are a great step forward. However, they are only one additional tool to build intelligent systems. Not every problem is a nail... and this specific hammer has some issues one needs to be aware of.

At the end of last month, I said "so long" to my friends and colleagues at #OwnBackup. While my time there was shorter than one would hope, I had the immense pleasure of building an outstanding Data and Analytics organization from scratch. Eric Liebert, Brina Patel, Chitrangada Wagh, Swati Jain, Linh Trieu and Gopal K. - you are amazing and it was a real joy and honor to work with you. I am certain that you will expand the foundations we built and add tremendous value to the organization. I would like to thank Lihod Rachmilevitch, Jake Kornreich and Adrian K. for their help, support and guidance during my tenure. The progress we made would not have been possible without you. #Ownbackup is an amazing company with wonderful people and excellent products. If you value your cloud data and would rather not risk losing it - speak with them. I know I will in my next role.To all my former colleagues: It was a pleasure.
