Are Ground Pecan Shells safe for dogs? Issues: Ground pecan shells can cause digestive issues and blockages in dogs. It is also a common allergen for dogs. Warnings: Avoid feeding dog food with ground pecan shells as it can lead to serious health problems.

We use Pecan Shells in some of our recipes as they are a great source of fiber. It's not any particular ingredient that makes a good pet food – it's the complete process.

Pecan shell fiber is predominantly composed of insoluble fiber (cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose) and contains small amounts of fat (<4%) and protein (<3%). It also contains approximately 4.5% polyphenols and 10% proanthocyanidins, molecules recognized for antioxidant activity [7].

Ground pecan shells are used as a source of dietary fiber.

Chances are that the swallowing of this little bit of shell will be a non issue. Dogs will consume peanut shells, pecan shells, and other nut shells all the time and not have a problem.

Juglone is the toxic substance in pecans that wreaks havoc on your dog's system. It can cause liver damage and is not something to take lightly. Dogs and juglone don't mix, and even a small amount can be harmful. Short-term effects include gastrointestinal distress and neurological symptoms.

Coarsely ground pecan shells are used as mulch, in the grill to add smoked pecan flavor and even as an earth-friendly biofuel for the wood stove.

Pecan shell mulch is slightly acidic and is especially good around acid-loving plants such as azaleas. Pecan shells will eventually decompose and are therefore, good candidates for your compost bin. And why not replace the mesquite and hickory chips you use to flavor your barbecue with pecan shells?

NUT FEEDERS

Shuckworms can be one of the more destructive pests of pecan. These are white worms that grow to 3/8 inch and tunnel in small nuts causing them to drop in July and August. After shells harden, larvae tunnel in shucks and prevent kernels from developing properly.

What animals eat pecans in the shell? ›

Birds and squirrels are not the only animals that eat pecans. If your pecans are being eaten, it might also be other nut-loving pests such as raccoons, possums, mice, hogs, and even cows.

If you have a squirrel feeder, you can place shelled, cracked, or in-shell pecans in it. Afterward, stand-back and observe their excited interest in the tasty morsels you provided. Pecan nuts are delicious for people and squirrels alike.

Never feed your dog the shells of nuts. These may be toxic and they all pose a choking threat. Their size and texture also mean that they can cause tears in the digestive tract and other injuries while making their way through their body.

The shells of pecans can be crushed into pieces about a 1/2-inch long or so to create mulch. Some items like recycled rubber don't break down and enrich the soil, but that isn't the case when pecan shells are used. They put nutrients into the dirt that help flowers, shrubs, and more thrive.

Eggshells are a good source of calcium, which is essential for maintaining strong bones and teeth in dogs. Calcium is particularly important for growing puppies and pregnant or lactating dogs. You can supplement your dog's calcium intake by feeding him eggshells.
