What is the difference between giant TCR Advanced and SL? ›

TCR Advanced SL receives its best carbon fiber frame and fork, as well as an integrated seat mast. The TCR Advanced swaps the integrated seat mast for an aero seat post and uses a standard modulus carbon frame and fork.

2024. The 10th generation TCR, featuring the all-new OverDrive Aero steerer tube technology and an integrated co*ckpit with internal cable routing, is unveiled following pre-season test sessions with Team Jayco AlUla.

The result is a frame that's claimed to weigh 690g (size medium) compared to the previous generation's 765g. 690g may not sound super-light compared to the likes of Specialized's S-Works Aethos (585g, size 56cm), but Giant argues the new TCR has superior aerodynamics, while its weight also includes the seat mast.

Claimed weight for an unpainted medium TCR Advanced SL frame is now down to 690 g – a decrease of 75 g from the previous version, or more than 10% – plus another 66 g for paint. For a medium flagship model, Giant is claiming 6.4 kg all in.

TCR, meaning "Total Compact Road," refers to the frame design that improves stiffness, weight saving, and aerodynamics, making it a favourite of competitive road cyclists and enthusiasts who prioritize speed, agility, and responsiveness.

The Giant TCR (Total Compact Road) is neither complete Endurance or Aero. It's a distinct blend of both. And as such it is the most versatile road bike in Giant's range. Within each platform there are several models at different price points.

Giant's TCR Advanced 2 has a brilliant balance of comfort and performance thanks to a stiff frameset, great geometry and plenty of exposed seatpost. It also feels very light and sprightly, which makes it a capable race bike straight out of the box.

In its premium version, the Giant TCR Advanced SL will be available to you for about 10,000 euros. Due to the brand's reputation, Giant bikes retain good resale value. It is therefore an excellent investment as well as a very good bike for climbing cols.

Advanced aerodynamics

Every tube shape was analyzed, engineered and tested to create an overall structure with significantly lower drag at a wider range of yaw angles. The result is a TCR that's faster than ever in sprints and solo situations.

Flat mounts and new thru-axles boost stiffness and improve overall handling, while added frame and fork clearance allows for larger diameter tyres up to 32mm.

The Giant TCR was the first road bike to use a compact frame – a smaller frame size overall, with more adjustment in the seat post, stem and bars than had traditionally been the case. (see the Magic Spanner's article on the history of compact frames).

It used a pedalling mannequin to verify the bike's aero credentials, rather than the static mannequin more normally used, to better reflect real-world riding. The net result, Giant claims, is a 4.19 watt aero gain over the previous generation TCR at 40km/h, with 2.28 watts contributed by the new frame design.

The TCR advanced and TCR advanced Pro share the exact same frame. The difference is that the Advanced models use an hybrid carbon/alloy fork steerer tube whereas the Advanced Pro uses an overdrive 2 (1.1/4) carbon steerer tube. The frame is the same.

Advanced-grade composite fork features a symmetric design and aero shaping, along with disc-brake integration and increased clearance for tires up to 33mm. The design makes it lighter, stiffer and more aerodynamic.

The Giant Defy Advanced Pro is exactly the same frame but comes equipped with full carbon steerer, as opposed to the hybrid version found on the Advanced range. Giant really aren't messing around with their Advanced Pro range, with all models coming equipped with carbon wheels.
