CORSICA LAST NIGHT Large Audience Henrti Him at the Detroit Opera House A large audience gathered at the Detroit opera house last night to listen to a de scription ot a bicycle tour through Corsica by Burton Holmes Chicago's popular lecturer As was expected Mr Holmes held the attention of his listeners from beginning to end witn his grapnic pictures of life in the land ot the vendetta He told about a visit to the house where Na poleon was born relating many incidents in a pleasing manner The mountainous passes of the vendetta country were de scribed as containing much red granite which seemed typical of the locality where so much blood had been shed The vendet ta said the lecturer exists to day The absurd features of some of the feuds were reviewed As the result of the killing of a dog many lives were sacrificed The Corsicans were never actually con quered although often subdued and the island from time Immemorial has under gone all kinds of internal dissensions As a people they are proud and fearless and the lives of their heroes and patriots are replete with illustrious deeds ot valor At the present time a splendid road runs over the mountains the work of the rench government which has possession ot the island The bandits are much feared to day and even have considerable politi cal influence It is useful to have the friendship ot the outcasts for they will en able a man to collect a debt or persuade a creditor to extend the time The inns in the mountains are not at all prepared to entertain guests and sometimes the larders are entirely empty A humorous recital of experiences with Corsican land lords was given On the road Mr Holmes met a New York lawyer who accompanied him most of the trip The lawyer was a good deal of a wag and many a tunny ex perience was the result of his presence with his guide books in all languages and his mixture of rench and Italian in his conversation with the natives whose dia lect is a sort of combination of the two tongues The photographs taken by Mr Holmes were numerous and admirably illustrated the lecture Historically the island was briefly but eloquently treated The man ners of the people were skillfully referred to and while the trip was barren of ex citing incidents It was replete with many bright and entertaining derails Mr Holmes was cordially greeted at the conclusion of his discourse To night he win tell about church spoke to the teachers of the public schools yesterday In the ninth grade room of the Biddle house on the sub ject of Training" He was greeted by a roomful of teacheis who were given a good talk on industrial matters Dr Prall deplored the tendency to make automatons of laboring men by giving them some speci fic piece of labor to do making it unneces sary for them to learn the mechanism of the machines they use and thus making of them mere pieces of the machine at hand He thought the tendency could be nothing short of brutalizing Another factor in the process of brutalization was the concentra tion of capital In the hands of the few He said the so called great captains of indus try were killing the goose that lays the golden egg when they reduce wages for then their workmen have nothing with which to buy He thought that th remedy lay partly in the schools which should in culcate better Ideas and better principles In Industrial life Vholesome oure and ul1 fruit 5 i is a 2
